Upon evaluation, if tissue is damaged, an apicoectomy may be needed. This is a simple and mild procedure where only local anesthesia is needed for a minor incision to be made into the gum tissue to expose the bone and any surrounding inflamed tissue. The damaged tissue is removed along with the tip of the tooth’s root. The root-end is then filled to prevent any reinfection. Upon completion of the procedure, the gums will be sutured. Typically, the gum tissue is fully healed within 2-3 weeks.
How is pain managed during the procedure?
At the start of an apicoectomy, local anesthesia will be applied to the area where the incision will be made. Patients are not consciously sedated, because it is not needed for this procedure. Dr. Penney and his experienced endodontic staff will ensure that quality care is provided throughout the procedure and that any discomfort is properly managed – the office even utilizes massage dental chairs to provide additional comfort. Ultimately, patients should experience pain relief following an apicoectomy!
Here are a few tips for alleviating and easing any discomfort experienced at home immediately after an apicoectomy.
Minor discomfort, swelling, and numbness are to be expected, but there are ways you can manage these symptoms at home to make recovery as smooth as possible.
Many medical procedures can cause patients to feel tired after. If possible, plan to rest after you leave the procedure.
If any swelling or sensitivity is experienced following this procedure, patients can ice the area. Icing should be done incrementally – apply ice for 20 minutes, and then follow with 20 minutes without ice to give the area a break. Continue to do this as needed within the first 12 hours after the procedure.
Plan to eat soft foods like pudding, yogurt, jello, and ice cream. If possible, avoid eating hot foods or anything crunchy or hard for the first week. It is important to not irritate or agitate the area, so the stitches are not disturbed. Do not brush the area where the procedure was performed when cleaning your teeth at home for a few days. Also, refrain from pulling at the lip or cheek around the surgical area. Using a straw, smoking, or poking at the area can also cause bleeding and should be avoided.
Over the counter NSAIDs can help with swelling and bruising. If Dr. Penney believes additional pain medication may be needed, a prescription will be provided. As with any prescribed medication, it is important to follow the instructions and take the medication as prescribed.
Following the above steps will assist with recovery at home for the first week or so. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled as needed to monitor and check on healing and to ensure that the inflammation is gone. Within 2-3 weeks the gum tissue should be fully healed.
